Soul Glossary Definition

The Oversoul, written in 1841 by Ralph Waldo Emerson may have defined the concept of soul as well as anyone in the English language. He said,

“We live in succession,in division, in parts and particles.  Meantime within us is the soul of the whole, the wise silence; the universal being to which every part and particle is related…All goes toshow that the soul in man is…not a faculty, but a light, is not the intellect or the will, but the master of the intellect and the will; is the background of our being—an immensity not possessed that cannot be possessed.”

Contemporary spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle puts it this way, “If you sense an alert inner stillness in the background—while things happen in the foreground—that’s it!”
